'Spiritual Space'
2017
The place of spirituality is located within the Whale Mall in South Bank. The proposed design is intended for the Pureland Buddhist faith group as well as for the contemporary dancers of the Expressions Dance Company. The concept incorporates the main elements of ‘the light on things’, ‘levels of intimacy’ and ‘composure and seduction’ from Peter Zumthor’s Atmospheres.

The Brisbane river is a renowned aspect of the urban landscape. The riparian edge and the mangrove vegetation that surrounds it has informed the shape and contour of the multi-use structures that encompasses the entirety of the mall. These organic shapes create pathways for users, and also house the Pureland Buddhist space.

Through meditation and recitation, one’s true inner and pure nature evolves towards enlightenment and away from the illusions of this world – created by our senses. This process however is never direct. The paths represent this shifting journey of self and the attainment of enlightenment – something that is complex and uncertain.
