'Furniture Studies - ARCUS.'

(Groupwork) - 2019

*Selected to showcase at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

Designed for the Fortitude Valley Secondary College, the concept of ARCUS was born from a desire to create a sophisticated playscape. Our aim was to offer students a piece the use of which could be open to interpretation and incite innovation. ARCUS is modular, versatile and embracing, and does not inhibit students in how they should interact with it.

ARCUS is a two-piece set which functions both independently and when connected. The design consists of a large, hollow, U-shaped piece, and a smaller pedestal which fits inside. Both pieces are cushioned for comfort, however the placement of this does not dictate how it must be used.

As the piece was to be designed for students from grades 7 to 12, we allowed for a level of playfulness that the younger students could enjoy, whilst providing a simple yet elegant function for older students or staff. When designing this piece we considered every possibility of interaction by students whilst using ARCUS, however wanted to afford them the opportunity of discovery without limitation or guidance. The multi-use design is intuitive and simple, and can be rearranged, pulled apart and put back together.

The ARCUS piece has considered the theme of inside outside with the contrast between the two pieces. This is demonstrated through the pedestal fitting within the U shape and, the contradiction of having the foam on the inside of the U shape and on the outside of the pedestal. Additionally, the U shape embraces the body whilst sitting inside it however the pedestal sits outside of it. ARCUS also addresses the notion of duality through its material properties with the malleability of the foam versus the strength of the plywood.
